AFL Player Moji

Hodge, Franklin, Ablett, Betts, Hope, Brennan and Riewoldt are just some of the AFL players who will be appearing as emojis on phones across Australia from today.

Designed in collaboration with the players themselves, the app sees more than 40 of the AFL’s best players, including Patrick Dangerfield, Rory Sloane, Max Gawn, Daisy Pearce and Scott Pendlebury, recreated in emoji form.

Launching just in time for the finals series, AFL Players Moji allows fans to communicate with family and friends using hundreds of unique and exclusive emoji stickers, animations, audio and video.

Working with many stakeholders and players, we had to understand the challenge of bringing the personality of the most beloved sport in Australia, creating an app that encourages users to co-create and generating memorable brand experiences

Strategy & Approach

Our brains are hardwired to identify and complete patterns. Great experiences allow people to partly own them. When we developed the AFL Players app, we gave users the ability to custom create a message with their favourite player or commentator, then share among friends, something that was never done before. More than just allowing storytelling, we enabled an immersive story-doing.

Final experience

Results speak for themselves. In less than 48 hours AFL Players became Australia’s top paid app, being featured by App Store’s ‘New Apps We Love’ and across most popular news sites and radio stations. Read more on Marketing Magazine feature
